South Indian Poha Upma Recipe Reading Bengali Chirer Pulao Recipe 1 minute
Poha is a common breakfast food in Bengal that has a hint of sweetness. Bengali Chirer Pulao is one of the healthiest Poha recipes because of the nutrients it gets from the veggies and raisins. So, how is Bengali Poha made?

Expert Tips

  • Poha Preparation: Ensure that you rinse the poha well under running water and drain excess water to prevent it from becoming mushy.
  • Vegetable Variation: Feel free to add or substitute vegetables like potatoes, bell peppers, or peas according to what you have on hand.
  • Tempering Flavor: The kalonji (nigella seeds) adds a distinct flavor to the dish. If unavailable, you can skip it or use cumin seeds instead.
  • Garnish: Fresh coriander leaves add a pop of color and enhance the dish's flavor. Don't skip them if possible.

Faqs

Can I make this recipe without peanuts and raisins?

Absolutely! While peanuts and raisins add a delightful crunch and sweetness, you can omit them if you have allergies or prefer not to use them. The dish will still be delicious.

How do I adjust the spice level to my preference?

Adjusting the spice level is easy. You can increase or decrease the amount of pepper used or add a pinch of red chili powder for extra heat. Taste as you go and adjust accordingly.

Can I use pre-cooked or leftover rice instead of poha?

While traditional Bengali Chirer Pulao uses poha (flattened rice), you can experiment with pre-cooked or leftover rice. Keep in mind that the texture and flavor may vary slightly, but it's a great way to use up leftovers.

Is this dish suitable for vegans?
